“La Primera Piedra” (The First Stone) is the title of this third exhibition by the artist Christiane Pooley in the Gallery. Based in Paris, her work has been distinguished for its incessant reflection on the territory, both physical and ontological. Like a type of memory mapping, Pooley constructs and deconstructs through painting, both with landscapes and memories: “painting can make a reference to contradictory elements, putting different temporalities on the same plane, the relationship painting has with geography and the human aspect of geography”, in the words of the artist.

On this occasion, alluding to the title of the exhibition, in a type of foundational act, the artist seeks to stress two concepts that cross her own history: rootedness and uprooting. This is how Pooley creates her exhibition from images of places and spaces that she has inhabited and considers as her place of anchorage in the world, particularly the Chilean Araucanía, her homeland: “Thinking of space in a pictorial way, a body in the world, unstable notions of home”, in Pooleys words.

In the Graphic Room, Pooley will use the repetition of the image both as a pictorial strategy, as well as an allegory of those recurring mental images that cannot be controlled, as the artist points out: “This repetition allows me, among many things, to make visible the idea of space, to uncover an image in its comprised spatiality. To show the limitations of our perception and different points of view, sometimes contradictory, existing in a situation”.
